magazine covers

Magazine advertisements

Why do artists choose to advertise through magazines?
  • to firstly create an image of there style to the audience and fans.
  • promoting the artist by exploiting them to the public.
  • to give more information about upcoming albums and tours.
  • to show extra information about the album
  • The image is there to represent punk rock genre. The band members are all stood in a relaxed, slumped position. The singer of a band is often the person that is most well known and concentrated on. We can see it in this photo, the four band members looking directly at the camera standing behind the singer (Axile Rose). This lets us know that there is authority and that he is one of the most important members of the band.
  • The colors used represents the simplicity of the magazine cover. Simple magazine adverts can often work to an artists advantage, as they are clear and in block form, so titles and subtitles stand out. It may also suggest to the fan that it is more about the music then it is advertising fancy magazine adverts.

digipack analysis 3

Digipack analysis 3

Arctic monkeys- whatever people say I am, that is what I am not.

We can see that the front cover is in black and white which creates a retro feel to the album which links with the indie/rock genre. The picture is of him having a cigarette which may represent the rebellious stereotypes from rock music. The name of the album is in the top left corner in black to stand out from the white background.

The black and white colors are kept consistent throughout the whole digipack which makes the album look professional. The cigarettes on the album add to the rebellious representation of the genre of rock/indie and appeals to that particular target audience.

The track names are in white to stand out from the black background. The cigarette is again used to carry on the theme of youth and recklessness.

chosen song analysis

chosen song analysis

The song I have chosen is White stripes- its true that we love one another.
This song is about the love shared between Jack white hall and Holly. The song contains certain levels of humour but also declaring there love for each other.
It's True That We Love One Another"

Well it's true that we love one another
I love Jack White like a little BROTHER
Well Holly I love you too but there's
Just so much that I don't know about you

Jack give me some money to pay my bills
All the dough I give you Holly
You been using on pain pills
Jack will you call me if you're able?
I got your phone number written
In the back of my bible
Jack I think your pulling my leg
And I think maybe I better ask Meg
Meg do you think Jack really loves me?
You know, I don't care because
Jack really bugs me
Why don't you ask him now?
Well I would Meg
I really just don't know how
Just say 'Jack , do you adore me?'
Well I would Holly but love really bores me
Well maybe we should just be friends
I'm just kidding Holly
You know that I'll love you 'til the end

Well it's true that we love one another
I love Jack White like a little brother
Well Holly I love you too but there's
Just so much that I don't know about you

Holly give me some of your English lovin'
If I did that Jack I'd have one in the oven
Why don't you go off and just love yourself
If I did that Holly there won't be anything
Left for anybody else
Jack it's too bad about the way you look
You know I gave that horse a carrot
So he'd break your foot
Will the two of you cut it out
And tell 'em what it's really all about

Well it's true that we love one another
I love Jack White like a little brother
Well Holly I love you too but there's
Just so much that I don't know about you

The reason I think I could make a great eye catching music video with this song is mainly down to the story line. It shows the arguing and teasing that any couple that truly love each other have. My idea for the video is to recreate this story line, to have one a boy acting as Jack, a girl as Holly and another girl as Meg who is the best friend/Councillor of the story. However for it to stick with in the audiences mind I must incorporate other effects. Usually in the genre of acoustic there is little lighting and hi-fi technology used as is it seen not to fit the mood of the genre. However I think by combining the the two together will create something that audiences will remember.

Inspirations for chosen song.

My inspiration for the idea of this video came from a music video from Gotye with his number one single somebody that I used to know. In this video it shows the love story between the two and how they fell out and now do not look at them in the same way. you can also how they have used the painting the background. Ways in which this video and mine will be similar is that mine will follow a story line of love but in a happier and more jolly mood to this.

Another inspiration to create this style of video is from the musical Grease. The first song in the musical is summer lovin. This is where both Sandy and Danny are singing about there love story over the summer not realizing that they are both at the same school. During the song it flicks from Danny to Sandy, so the audience know how they feel for one another but the actors don't, this adds tension to the story as the audience wan them to meet and fall in love.

lighting and effects

Because of the happy nature of the song I want to use bright colours. In the song there are moments where the mood changes, so I want to have the background representing the moods. For example to have the bright colors shown on the left when they are singing about there love for one another, but one they start to tease and argue it will go back to an ordinary background.

The picture shown one the right is the sort of effect I want to employ into my music video. As you can see by standing in front of the projector makes her become part of the background which I think is very effective.

possible song choices

Possible song choices

These are three possible song choices for my music video, and a breif description of why I think they would be good choices.

white stripes- Its true that we love one another.

There is no official music video as it is a fairly old song. I thought this may be a good song to choose as it is about two people arguing in a humorous manor over there love for each other. I think i could create a very good narrative music video using this song, as it is to people arguing and teasing each other about there love for one another.

Wombats- I like girls and fast cars.

This song is a the creating of the stereotype of a young man. Being in this age category the song may be very easy to relate to. If I was to do this song I would follow a narrative/performance video, with shots going back and forth from the band playing to the story line. The song is about boys who dont care about serious things such as making money or having a particular life style, they just want to have fun.

Jimi Hendrix- little wings.

The reason i have picked this song as one of my options is because the lyrics are truly spectacular. These lyrics which are mind boggling could be made into a beautiful flowing love story, and its only a very short song.

possible genre for music video

Features that may be seen in a typical rock music video:
  • often in a performance style, so either the band playing in the studio, in a practice session or at a live concert. This is because the main focus is on the instruments they are palying so it is important that the video shows that to attract veiwers.
  • The clothing is usual deviant from how the average person dresses. It largely depends on what sub genre it is, for example if it is heavy metal the band memebers may be wearing gothic clothing.
  • The main focus will be on the singer, unless the band have a very famous drummer of guitarist. For example more people will be fans of the Slash then they are Axile rose.
Features that may be seen in a typical acoustic music video:
  • In the genre of acoustic it can sometimes just be the singer with a guitar. So they have to make one of the two attractive to the audience. The main focus is on the lyrics, this is why many acoustic songs are based on the theme of love, as it is a strong appealing theme that everyone like to hear about.
  • Because the lyrics are such a vital part of the how they attract fans, It is often that the music video will be in a narrative linking to the lyrics of the song.

mood board

mood board

This mood board shows some of the way in which I want to conduct my mood board. By standing in front of a projector you can create colourful back grounds. It also possible to do with real locations as shown the picture on the top right and top left. As the pattern of the background also comes off the person it make them seem part of the background.

Conte's remix- wake me up by Avicci.

There are many different things you can do using projector screens. A very advanced use of projectors is shown in Conte's remix of wake me up by Avicii. Although this may be far to advanced for the technology I have to use, it is a great example of how different types of technologies can be used in different ways.

digipack analysis 2

Digipacks 2

JAY Z AND LINKIN PARK- collison course

Front cover- Linkin park are a rock band with an electronic feel to them and Jay z is a very well known rapper. We can see that on the front cover there is the graffiti pattern behind the writing. This may represent the hip hop side of the album and the brown behind it may represent the more rock side, combining the two together can attract fans from both genres meaning twice as many buyers of the CD. The name of the album collision course describes the merging of the two different genres.

The same sort of dark colours are kept throughout the album as seen on the CD. This makes the album look professional and keeps the colour scheme consistent. I will keep my colour scheme consistent when I come to do my digipack as it makes it more aesthetically pleasing. We see the font on both the front cover and on the CD are made so it looks 3D, this makes it more eye catching to the audience.

On the inside flap there is information about live performances, content of the dvd and studio features. This offers a higher incentive to the fans to buy the digipack as they are getting more information and more features then they would just buying the normal album. Then of course there is the track list, again keeping a constant colour scheme through out the whole album. By using covers of Jay z songs this then targets a larger audience as the better known songs are being played by different artists and merging different genres.

Examples of digipacks

Digipacks analysis

Digipack were first created to give fans more information and features when buying CDs, in the idea that this will attract buyers in a similar way to a music video. This gives fans a reason to buy the CD rather then just download via iTunes or the internet.
The example I am going to use is ACDC's digipack of there album Back In black.

Front cover- The front cover to this album is very simplistic, no pictures, no patterns just the name of the band and the album. But this doesn't make it any less eye catching to the audience as it relates to the name of the album. The colour black is a rebellious colour which relates to the rock genre stereotype. By having the main focus be on the album name make the buyer think more about how this could relate to ACDC and the songs with in the album.

CD- the dark, gloomy and mysterious odours on the CD suggest gives off idea of what the album may contain and the tone of some of the songs. The simple colours all over the Digipack may suggest that the songs are not going to have any miraculous changes, just the four band members playing there original sort of music. This proves to be true in the song Back in black, which most people see to be one of the most famous rock songs of the 80s and even with its simple tune, one of the most well known guitar riffs.

Track list- the white writing on the black background makes the tracks stand out and easy to see.
by using black it keeps the colour scheme the same throughout the whole album, this keeps the buyers thoughts about the album the same.

in general the CD is fairly simple but this can work to an artists advantage as it can stand out just as much to a CD that is packed with colour.

Digipacks

Why use Digipacks?

Digipacks can be used to inform the audience of more information about the CD and so on. They are usually used to attract audiences and create more buyers by there aesthetics and advantages to normal  CDs. It fold out into a display of information about the album, including album name, track name, pictures of band and other extra information.

acoustic music conventions

acoustic music conventions

MISE-EN-SCENE- there is no particular way that acoustic artists dress apart from some who may dress in an indie style. this is to show the that its all about the music for them and not about dressing in a particular way to provide themselves with fame and popularity. The main focus is on there instruments to show off there talent to the viewers. the location that acoustic videos are often filmed inure fairly peaceful locations such as in fields or in the studio. They often follow a story line that relates to the lyrics.

CAMERA TECHNIQUES- the camera usually concentrates on the instrument they are playing, most commonly an acoustic guitar.

Acoustic music is the genre I will most likely use for my music video. This is because the lyrics are easy to relate to and you can come up with and create some great story lines that are linked with the tone and rhythm of the song.

I gave three questionaires out to find out what music and music videos these students were into. This is what they said:

conventions of dance and electric music

conventions of dance and electric music

MISE-EN-SCENE- Dance videos are often located in clubs where the atmosphere is upbeat and fits the tone of the song. Although the DJ is not doing anything he is still shown with his equipment to show off his musical talent. Females are often shown with little clothing on and the men are seen as very dominant. The crowds in the club are often predominately women with provocative clothing. Other locations where dance music videos may be filmed is in tropical locations, large boats, beaches or large beach houses. An example of this is Jennifer Lopez- on the floor.

CAMERA TECHNIQUES- As there are no specific instruments to be zoomed in on the main focus is on the crowd and the singer (if there is one). there are lots of shots from up high which shows the whole crowd in the club dancing and so on. This then shows the mood and how everyone is having a great time, this attracts viewers.

EDITING- often high tech lighting is used so that it fits the beat and gives of club vibes.

rock music video conventions

rock music video conventions

rock music is usually filmed in a performance format. This is the band usually being filmed in there natural environment, such as having a band practice or being filmed live. There is often a story which then intertwines with them performing live. Modern rock music tends to have more story based music videos, unlike older rock which is found to still dominate the rock industry tend to just have videos of them performing live and only for the most popular songs will there be videos as there was firstly limited people who had television and also the technology for filming was no where near as advanced as we see it today. Some examples of this are  Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Guns & Roses.

Led Zeppelin- going to California (live at earls court)
MISE-EN-SCENE- Rock music can be stereotyped to be seen as rebellious and fighting against society, especially the sub genre of heavy metal. The clothing often worn by rock stars is often either very simple or very extreme, For example David Bowie used to dress very femininity in the days of glam rock, where as Iggy pop use not even wear a shirt even at the age of sixty. rock stars often have a piece of clothing that they are remembered by and that resembles them.

Freddie Mercury always sang with a half microphone stand, something is remembered for.

for example Slash, who is the guitarist in Guns & Roses wear his top hat and that is something that he is remembered by.

likely locations for a music video are arenas and stadiums if the bands music is them at a concert, for louder and more thrash metal the location may be in dark and mysterious places (e.g a forest, abandoned warehouse or buildings).

CAMERA TECHNIQUES- The lead singer is often the main focus of the band and there will be less shots of the drummer, guitarist and other musicians in the band. There are often close ups of the instruments that they are playing to display the talents that they have to the audience. Hand held camera techniques are used to show what it would be there to see them live and to recreate the atmosphere. Even if the song is not particularly good by making the atmosphere seem very lively it makes the watcher of the video feel that they are a very talented band. An example of this is Cage the elephant, come a little closer.

EDITING- The editing often has to change the frame fairly quickly so that they can focus on each band member for a certain amount of time. Also the editing often has to represent the mood of the song and its pace.
